Playing the Tourist: Night Market

Generally speaking, I don't like playing the tourist.  Even if I am a tourist, I don't like to look obvious with a camera around my neck or in front of my face.  But I have sacrificed for your sakes, so you can enjoy the local sights along with me.  Work has been very busy, learning 4 new sets of curriculum and preparing materials to go with lessons.  I planned to go into school this weekend, but didn't.  I brought work home to do this weekend, but didn't do it.  Instead we went down to the Night Market by the riverfront on Saturday evening and had dinner after.

That's one of my roommates, Meredith, in front.  She turned around just as I was taking a picture.  That glam look and hair twirl was totally unplanned for.

That's sugar cane getting ready to be juiced.  I've not tried it yet, but I've been wanting to.  I've heard after they press out the juice, they will squeeze a little orange or lime into it before you drink it.  Sounds delightful.

Local vendors in the "food court".  Once you get your food, fried noodles or some kind of meat on a stick, you go and sit on the mats family style.  There is a communal chili sauce and other condiments in the middle of each mat.  You can barely see the mats in the background of this picture and a few people sitting around.  They also have live entertainment, but we were there too early and missed it.

My purchases from the market.  Both have Cambodian prints and were $5 each.  I probably could have got a better deal if I bought both from the same vendor.  This picture doesn't do justice to the cuteness of both dresses, so you will just have to use your imagination. I wore the one on the left to church today, and somebody asked me about it.  Yes, I'm very pleased with my purchases!

After the night market we went to a Lebanese restaurant.  I LOVE Lebanese food.  The was my classic mezze dish.  Mmm, so good.  That's also my made to order coconut mango smoothie.  Freshly made fruit juices and smoothies are one of the great delights of Cambodia.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get that school work done.  Maybe....
